What is Project Starline? This is the company’s interesting and very expensive way of making video calls more personal. Instead of watching a person on a flat screen, the company wants to go the extra mile. When you sit in a booth, you’ll be scanned by multiple cameras. These cameras track your head movements, body movements, and eye movements. Then, this information is processed and sent to another person with another booth. The other person will see a pretty realistic 3D rendering of you in real-time. Google is striving as much as it can to create photorealistic renders of both people. This will really make it feel like the other person is in the room with you. It’s interesting, and it seems to take us one step closer to the hologram devices we see on Star Wars.
Google is ready to test Project Starline
What we saw during Google I/O last year was really early footage and some concepts. It wasn’t anything really solid. It was mostly just to get the idea across. However, Google wants to take Starline out on the road and start testing it with some partners. These partners include notable companies such as T-Mobile, WeWork, and Salesforce. These tests will include more than 100 companies across many different industries. They will take place later on this year. Since we’re halfway through October, you can expect the tests to begin soon. However, we should expect the tests to go on for a while, as this type of technology seems to be rather experimental. If these 3D chat booths do actually hit retail, one can only imagine how steep the price tag will be for one. In any case, it will be interesting to see these 3D chat booths in action.
