NVIDIA confirms it was hit by a cyberattack
NVIDIA is one of the biggest chip manufacturers that we have today, and it’s responsible for powering a lot of the most powerful gaming rigs. The company recently tried (and failed) to buy ARM from SoftBank a little while back. Since it’s a large company, it’s a large target for hackers to try and infiltrate. And, that’s exactly what happened. NVIDIA released a statement stating that it had been affected by a cyberattack from unknown hackers. These hackers were able to get past NVIDIA’s security and swipe a ton of data from the company. While the company didn’t reveal what was stolen exactly, the report says that a lot of important and top-secret data was stolen. On February 27th, the hackers, known as LAPSU$$, posted to a group “We hacked NVIDIA” and went on to explain what they did along with their demands. The hackers said that, after a week in the system, they stole a terabyte of data from the company. This includes schematics, driver information, firmware information, and source code to the company’s frame-rate boosting DLSS technology. The hackers demanded that NVIDIA fork over an undisclosed sum of cryptocurrency to keep the information private. As of yet, the company didn’t respond to the threat. However, the hackers mentioned that and, consequently, leaked about 19GB of data to the public.
The hackers stated why they did this
The hackers went on to say just why they put this information up for ransom. They felt that they needed to speak for the mining and gaming community. So, they demanded that NVIDIA make major changes to their chips. The hackers wanted NVIDIA to remove every IHR limitation on its chips. So far, the hackers only released a small part of the data, but that won’t be the end of the story. Everyone’s standing by to see what NVIDIA is going to do to handle this issue.
