The information was provided by the newly announced CTO of Meta, Andrew Bosworth, on a Facebook post. The company said that the Oculus Quest renaming will occur in early 2022. Meanwhile, the Oculus app is changing to the Meta Quest app (via). Bosworth added that the company wants users to know that Quest is a Meta product.
Facebook Portal is also getting a new name
“We all have a strong attachment to the Oculus brand, and this was a very difficult decision to make. While we’re changing the brand of the hardware, Oculus will continue to be a core part of our DNA and will live on in things like software and developer tools,” Bosworth said. “Over the next few months, you’ll see a phased rollout of the brand across all the relevant products and services — including Facebook Portal to Meta Portal. For consumers and fans of the Oculus platform, a name change or rebranding was on the cards after Facebook acquired the platform in 2014. Bosworth further said that the name change would extend to devices like the Facebook Portal. This smart display will be known as the Meta Portal going forward. Meta also said that users would no longer need Facebook logins to use Oculus headsets. This is a reversal of its policy from 2020. We also got an early look at a potential Meta smartwatch, though it’s still early days. Taking these factors into account, it’s clear that quite a lot is changing with the rebranding. The highly anticipated rebranding of Facebook came at the company’s Connect 2021 virtual event on Thursday. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg spoke in some detail about the company’s future ambitions, particularly with VR/AR. Meta managed to keep the new name under the wraps until its announcement on October 28. The rebranding could help Meta take some heat off itself amid multiple controversies. The company is still in hot water over the revelations made by a whistleblower during Senate testimony. Additionally, a recent leak spoke about the internal conflict inside the company over the handling of right-leaning news sources on Facebook.
