The data is according to NPD’s Matt Piscatella on Twitter. Which states that the PS5 has broken the 33-month streak of the Nintendo Switch for best-selling console in unit sales. The last time any console did this well was in 2018 with Sony’s PS4. Earlier this year, Sony’s PS5 was deemed the fastest-selling console in US history. And by July Sony had already sold 10 million units of the PS5. Even with the stock shortages. One month later, it was reported that Sony had finally started making money off the PS5 hardware, but only with the disc version.
PS5 is the best-selling console in 2021 year-to-date in dollars
2021 has been a big year for the PS5 when it comes to how much money Sony has made off the console. Although, there’s still no hard numbers mentioned. As of September 2021, the PS5 was the best-selling console hardware for both dollar and unit sales. And 2021 year-to-date the PS5 is the best-selling console for dollar sales. That probably isn’t too surprising considering the PS5’s high $500 price tag. Especially when compared to the Nintendo Switch which retails for $300.

These were the best-selling games this year
In addition to console hardware sales, NPD data also shows 2021’s top 10 best-selling games. Note that the results are based on sales for all platforms, and not just PlayStation. And the numbers show US sales . Figures also show sales for both physical and digital copies of the games unless otherwise noted. In a shock to probably no one, Activision-Blizzard’s Call Of Duty franchise is once again the best-selling game of the year. With Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War being the number one game across all platforms. Madden NFL 22 takes the number 2 spot, having moved up from the number 4 spot the month prior. It’s also the number 1 game on the PlayStation platform for the month of September. MLB: The Show 21, which was the number 2 game last month, sits at number 3 for 2021’s top games. Although this does not include Xbox digital sales.
